Spring is a season of renewal—fresh air through open windows, clutter cleared away, and hearts ready for new beginnings. For compassionate Christians, spring cleaning is also an opportunity to reflect on how our everyday choices honor God’s creation.

Scripture reminds us that “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it” (Psalm 24:1). That includes not only our homes, but the animals and ecosystems affected by what we bring inside them. As followers of Christ, we are called to act with mercy and stewardship, caring for creation in ways that reflect God’s love. And living out mercy for God’s creation can be surprisingly practical—starting with the products we choose. Our beliefs shape our habits, and spring cleaning is a perfect place to put compassion into practice—let’s wipe away harm and scrub out cruelty with compassionate choices!

Choose Cruelty-Free Cleaning Products

Many conventional cleaning products are tested on animals or contain animal-derived ingredients. During your spring refresh, consider switching to cruelty-free, vegan cleaning supplies that are gentler on both animals and the environment. Look for labels that clearly state they are not tested on animals and are free of harsh chemicals. These products protect God’s creatures while also creating a safer, healthier home for your family.

Declutter With Purpose and Compassion

As you sort through closets and cabinets, think about where your unwanted items go. Donate usable goods to local shelters, thrift stores, or families in need. Local animal shelters typically need blankets, towels, and bedding, so be sure to bless them with pieces you’re no longer using. When we reduce waste and practice mindful consumption, we live out Proverbs 12:10: “The righteous care for the needs of their animals.”.

Reduce Waste and Protect Creation

Spring cleaning often means tossing out old items, but creation care invites us to pause. Can containers be reused? Can paper products be replaced with washable cloths? Simple shifts—like choosing reusable tools or eco-friendly trash bags—help reduce pollution that harms wildlife and God’s earth.

Turn Cleaning Into a Spiritual Practice

As you clean, pray for renewed commitment to compassion and justice. Let each room refreshed be a reminder of your calling to live gently on God’s earth, extending love to “the least of these,” including animals who depend on our mercy.
