When you lose someone as significant as a beloved companion, there’s not only a gaping hole in your heart and home, but also the potential of seeing your faith in a new light. And that’s exactly what happened to me after I lost Lulu.

I’ve had an academic interest in religion throughout my life. But as I grieved the loss of my dog companion, my religious studies turned to seeking, as I longed for reassurance that I would one day see her again. Coincidentally, my colleagues on the PETA LAMBS Team were putting the finishing touches on their Grief Program and asked if I would be interested in being among the first people to complete it.
The pain of my loss was still fresh, and this program was exactly what I needed to heal my heart and honor Lulu. It genuinely acknowledged the emotions I was feeling at different points in my grief, like anger and frustration, and it also provided a gentle blanket of comfort for my soul. Through appropriate scripture, reflections, and journal prompts, the program encouraged me to be intentional about working through my pain while sensitively respecting my emotions. The suggested weekly actions over the course of the program also inspired me to visit my local shelter, where I later adopted my new companion, Harvey.
After completing all six weeks of the program, my sorrow had been eased with the assurance of eternal reunion with my Lulu. My faith has also been deepened as this program showed me the depths of God’s kindness and protection, which He extends to all of His created individuals.
