God created black cats just like He created everyone else, and they can feel love, affection, pain, and fear just like us. Unfortunately, during the Halloween season, individuals with cruel intentions seek them out to use as props or targets for violence.
Over the years, PETA and law-enforcement officials have reported a rise in incidents of abuse against black cats around Halloween. Horrific reports of torturing, skinning, maiming, and killing black cats continue to surface. Companion cats have been stolen from their homes and murdered. Sadly, all cats left to roam freely outdoors are at risk of such cruelty every day, and that risk is exacerbated by a holiday that some people use as an excuse for cruelty.
You can help these cats now and throughout the year. If you have the time, space, and resources to bring a new companion cat into your home, please consider adopting one from an animal shelter. Never buy cats or any other animals from pet shops or breeders.
Do you already have a cat in your life? Be sure to keep them safe indoors and let your family, friends, neighbors, and church community know about the threats companion animals face when they’re allowed to roam freely. If you witness animal abuse, be sure to report it to your local authorities immediately. If officials are unresponsive, call PETA at 757-622-7382.
