Two days before Christmas, PETA UK volunteers visited the Vatican and hand-delivered a holiday gift for his Holiness: a festive basket stocked with vegan ham and other animal-friendly holiday treats as well as an epistle from PETA US director of Christian outreach and engagement Sarah Withrow King asking Pope Francis to encourage everyone to show compassion for all God’s creatures by celebrating a vegan Christmas. After delivering the basket, the volunteers gathered outside St. Peter’s Square to pass out free vegan ham slices to passersby and pilgrims. Everyone was thrilled to receive the vegan ham: It was all snapped up in seconds!
