Our animal kin suffers greatly when we forgo our role in creation to serve them, which is evident in the relentless war in Ukraine. The ugliness of battle reminds us how far we have fallen from the harmonious, sinless paradise God originally intended for us to live in. For more than three years, tens of thousands of animals have been killed, wounded, and displaced, caught in the crossfire of a war they did not start and cannot stop.
Every one of God’s beloved individuals, whether cow, cat, human, dog, duck or anyone else, was created with dignity. We have all been intricately woven together by our loving Father (Psalm 139:13-14), and God created humans to kindly care for the earth and all who inhabit it (Genesis 1:26-28). This call to dominion over creation is a call to kindly steward what God has deemed good; to share the great love our Father gives us.

But from the destruction, there is a shining beacon of hope. Since the invasion, PETA’s Global Compassion Fund and its partners have built a network of courageous, boots-on-the-ground rescue workers who have saved over 22,000 animals. They brave the frontlines of battle, risking everything to protect animals who are victims of human violence.

Not only are thousands of animals being given a second chance at life because of the rescue team’s vital work, more than 850 rescued animals are now living in peace at Animal Rescue Kharkiv’s sanctuary. There are spaces for dogs to run, cows to socialize, and pigs to sunbathe after their horrifying experiences in the war. They will have time to rest and heal, both physically and emotionally, because of the tireless work of the rescue team.

While the world may seem at times to be filled with cruelty and exploitation, each of us can live out our roles as the kind stewards of creation God calls us to be. Just like these inspiring rescue workers, we must take a bold stance for those we are called to protect and support those who fight to end animal exploitation. Donate to PETA’s Global Compassion Fund to join their vital work for animals today!
