As autumn arrives and fields yield their harvest, we are reminded of a simple truth: every lasting change begins with a seed planted.

Long before crops are gathered, seeds are sown and nurtured, often with little visible evidence of what is growing beneath the surface. In much the same way, acts of compassion, generosity, and perseverance may take time to bear fruit, but their impact can be life-changing.

A recent victory for animals who suffer in laboratories offers a powerful example.

For years, PETA worked to expose conditions at Red Beast Enterprises, a Colorado contract testing laboratory that bred and used animals for experimentation. Through investigations, public education, and persistent advocacy, PETA brought attention to the suffering of dogs and cats hidden behind the facility’s doors.

Those efforts helped pave the way for a remarkable victory: Red Beast Enterprises closed its operations. Nearly 70 surviving cats and dogs were liberated from the facility and given a new chance at life. Animals who had known only confinement and experimentation could finally experience soft beds, loving families, favorite toys, tasty treats, and the simple joy of exploring the world around them.

The cycle of cruelty at Red Beast, marked by forced breeding, experimentation, and death, has come to an end.

These rescued animals remind us that behind every campaign and every victory are individual lives. Each animal is a unique creation of God, capable of feeling fear and comfort, curiosity and joy.

As people of faith, we often encounter the themes of sowing and reaping throughout Scripture. These passages remind us that meaningful change rarely happens overnight. It grows steadily through faithful action, even when the results are not immediately visible.

The same is true when we work to protect animals.

Every conversation about kindness toward animals, every effort to encourage compassionate choices, every signed petition, and every gift helps build a more humane future. We may not see the impact immediately, but our actions matter.

The freedom of these dogs and cats is a powerful reminder of what compassionate people can accomplish together.

Every year, more than 110 million animals are used in laboratories in the United States. There is still much work to be done, and every autumn, PETA holds a special match to help fuel our Stop Animal Testing Campaign.

During our annual fall Stop Animal Testing Match, a gift can help go even further in the fight to replace cruel and ineffective animal experiments with modern, human-relevant research methods. It is an opportunity to double your impact for animals who urgently need protection.

While matching gifts help animals today, many supporters also think about how their compassion can continue making a difference far into the future.

Each October, Estate Planning Awareness Week will encourage individuals and families to reflect on the legacy they hope to leave behind. For many, that reflection may begin with a simple question: What would you like your life’s blessings to accomplish?

The resources entrusted to us are temporary, but the impact they create can endure for generations. Through a gift in a will, a beneficiary designation, or another planned gift, supporters can help ensure that their commitment to animals continues making a difference long after their lifetime.

As 2 Corinthians 9:7 reminds us: “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

If caring for animals is part of your faith, how will that compassion carry forward beyond your lifetime?

As we celebrate the harvest season, may we remember that every act of kindness is a seed. Some bear fruit quickly; others take years to blossom. Yet when nurtured through faithful action, those seeds can grow into extraordinary blessings for animals.

Whether through today’s advocacy with a gift made during the Stop Animal Testing Match, or a legacy left for the future of PETA’s work for animals, each of us has the opportunity to help cultivate a more compassionate world.

That is a harvest worth celebrating.
